Ordering Sustainable Dual Purpose Chickens

If you know anything about me, then you know that I got DEEP in the “chicken game” as I often say when talking about the 2020 pandemic. What I found, however, was a true love and passion for raising my own protein! One of the benefits of raising chickens for your meat protein is the fast turnaround time, especially when compared to the waiting period for that first beef steer, but also the ability to develop your flock’s standard of perfection, make tweaks and move towards a flock of birds that fulfills your needs.

After spending time in two of my favorite meat bird and dual purpose chicken groups, the American Bresse Chickens community and the Sustainable Meat Bird Breeds, Care, and Processing community, I knew that was the exact direction that I wanted to be in. Specifically, there was one woman who stood out to me that showcased an amazing amount of both factual knowledge and experience. It has become my goal to be able to speak with the same amount of passion and knowledge regarding the flocks that I am breeding and raising as this woman is.

Here’s the post that changed the trajectory of all my efforts!

While I currently have Marans that are 15 weeks old in a variety of colors, I have 10 American Bresse chickens ordered that I should be picking up in a week or so. Two weeks ago I purchased an incubator and am excited to get rocking and rolling with these different birds!

A big push for starting this breeding and raising process now is because I have 20 Ayam Cemani chickens and chicks on order for 2022 and I want to make sure that I am ready to go for these expensive birds to raise the best meat possible!

Ordering American Bresse…

… turned out to be a little more challenging than I had originally anticipated. I have this slight fear, even though I have done the research and talked to so many people, about having chicks delivered by mail. With the U.S. Postal Service being so hit or miss, it’s just too challenging for me to chance those lives for that cost. With that being said, I am excited to bring forward these dual birds in my community and found one breeder north of me who never responded to emails and one amazing Instagram account I’ve been following for a while that is located in the Washington part of the pacific northwest.

I am excited to visit Brandelyn (ironic on the name similarities right?) at her beautiful farm that you can see featured in Hobby Farms Magazine HERE in just a few weeks. Let’s also hope, for my fiancé’s sake, that I don’t come home with any of her slate heritage turkey chicks as well!
