Hiatt Farms

One of my favorite aspects of the homesteading life is the connections with others that have the same passion as my family and I. Connecting with these like-minded folks and trading stories and ideas is always a soul-filling adventure.

After delivering eggs to one of our family friends, they suggested that I stop by a small farm bakery nestled next to the hills in the coastal mountain range. Not exactly on my way home, but not really out of my way, I swung through and was pleasantly surprised by everything I saw. Hiatt Farms, as I learned, have been in business for eight years! The adorable farm store complements excursions to the local farmers markets and I loved seeing the cooperative-like feel that the store had.

Quaint and just off the road, I was greeted by friendly chickens scavenging away near the front door. Despite the rain pouring down, I noticed a cute eating area at the front and a sprawling lawn behind and down the hill. What a fun opportunity to get away and adventure on a summer weekend??

Inside there was honey, jams, bread, pies, baked goods, desserts, fresh eggs, and, of all things, chicken pot pie! I had been sent specifically to get the chicken pot pie, and found it interesting when the gentleman that was working both in the kitchen and the front counter said with a surprised laugh, “It’s one of our most popular!”

After chatting with them further about selling canned goods, meat chickens and more, I got the idea that maybe, just maybe, down the road, this could be a great opportunity for us to sell our meat birds too! I would much rather sell to one restauranteur than a variety of customers due to the rules and regulations around selling. It would limit the liability on our part.

I picked up the chicken pot pie for dinner and a jar of beautiful strawberry and vanilla jam. On my to-do list when I get home? Laundry, cleaning, and bread making!
